Choosing a counsellor is a personal decision. The relationship we build together is an important part of the counselling process, and I want you to feel safe, respected and able to be yourself.
I aim to create a space where you can talk openly about whatever is bringing you to counselling. You don't need to have the “right” words or have everything figured out before you come. You can simply arrive as you are.
I don't see myself as someone who has all the answers about your life. You are the expert in your own experiences, relationships, feelings and circumstances. My role is to walk alongside you, helping you explore what is happening and what you may need.
Counselling is something we do together. We will work collaboratively to understand what you would like from counselling and how we can use our sessions to support you. I won't tell you what you should do or make decisions for you.
There is no set pace for counselling. Some things may feel ready to explore, while other experiences may need more time. I will respect your pace and won't pressure you to talk about anything before you feel ready.
I will listen carefully to what you say, as well as paying attention to what may be difficult to put into words. I aim to offer empathy, curiosity and understanding rather than judgement or assumptions.
I believe that an authentic therapeutic relationship matters. I will be genuine and transparent with you while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries. If something doesn't feel right within our work, I encourage us to talk about it.
What you share with me is treated with respect and kept confidential within the boundaries of professional practice. At the beginning of our work, I will explain confidentiality and its limits clearly, including circumstances relating to safeguarding and serious risk.
You remain in control of your choices. I will not tell you what you should think, feel or do. Instead, I will support you to explore your options, understand yourself more deeply and make decisions that feel right for you.
I welcome you as an individual and respect your identity, values, beliefs, culture and lived experience. I recognise that we may have differences between us, and I remain open to learning from your perspective rather than making assumptions about your experience.
Clear and appropriate boundaries help create a safe therapeutic relationship. This includes how we communicate, the structure of sessions, confidentiality, appointments and the professional nature of our relationship. These boundaries are there to support your wellbeing and the counselling process.
For me, the working alliance is not simply an agreement about how counselling will happen. It is about creating a relationship in which you can feel safe enough to be honest, respected enough to be yourself, and supported enough to explore what matters to you.
I will bring my professional knowledge, experience and presence to our work, while you bring your own story, experiences and understanding of yourself.
We don't have to get everything right. What matters is that we can talk openly, work collaboratively and create a therapeutic relationship that feels meaningful and useful to you.
